Syria Introduces Plan to Resolve Sweida Crisis
During a joint press briefing in Damascus with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack, Syria’s foreign affairs chief Assad Hassan al-Shibani detailed the roadmap.
He stressed that the top priority is to hold accountable those responsible for attacks on civilians and their property, working in coordination with UN investigative bodies.
Additional measures outlined in the plan include ensuring continuous humanitarian and medical aid access to Sweida, reestablishing vital public services, deploying local interior security units to safeguard trade routes and roads, and clarifying the status of missing persons and detainees.
The roadmap also calls for initiating an internal reconciliation process with active involvement from Sweida’s local communities.
Highlighting the regional stakes, Safadi stressed, “Syria’s security was integral to regional security,” while strongly condemning Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory and demanding their immediate halt.
Describing the agreement as “a collective vision,” Barrack noted the plan’s role in enabling displaced residents to safely return to Sweida.
Sweida, predominantly inhabited by Druze communities, has suffered a dire humanitarian crisis since mid-July, triggered by deadly sectarian violence and Israeli attacks that disrupted essential supplies.
On July 19, Syrian presidential authorities declared a ceasefire and started deploying interior security forces in Sweida to reimpose order.
