UVA President Steps Down Amid Pressure from Trump Administration

(MENAFN) James Ryan, President of the University of Virginia (UVA), has agreed to step down following mounting pressure from the Trump administration, media reported on Friday. The U.S.
Department of Justice, currently investigating UVA’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices, reportedly demanded Ryan’s resignation as part of an agreement to resolve the ongoing probe.

The resignation request came after certain members of UVA’s board expressed concerns that failing to comply with the Justice Department’s directives could lead to significant financial repercussions, including the potential loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding.

Ryan, who has held the presidency at UVA since 2018, has faced criticism from conservative alumni and board members due to his strong backing of DEI initiatives. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the administration has actively sought to dismantle DEI programs, accusing them of fostering ideological bias.

The resignation follows Trump’s broader efforts, initiated in January, to challenge and roll back policies that, in his view, promote left-wing agendas in educational institutions.
