Trump Announces U.S. Will Hold Talks with Iran

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump revealed Monday that Washington will engage in diplomatic discussions with Tehran following recent military confrontations.

"We have scheduled Iran talks, and they want to talk," Trump announced to reporters alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

"They've requested a meeting...and if we can put something down on paper, that will be fine. It'll be good," he stated, before adding: "We'll see what happens."

Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed the diplomatic encounter will occur within the "next week or so."

When questioned about potential future military action against Iran, Trump expressed optimism about avoiding further conflict: "I hope we're not going to have to do that. I can't imagine wanting to do that. I can't imagine them wanting to do that. They want to meet...they want to work something out."

The diplomatic breakthrough follows intense military operations on June 22, when American B-2 bombers unleashed 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs—commonly called bunker busters—targeting Iran's Fordo and Natanz nuclear installations. Simultaneously, submarine-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles struck the Isfahan nuclear facility as part of Washington's broader campaign against Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Previous diplomatic efforts faced disruption when Israel conducted airstrikes against Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian infrastructure on June 13, derailing a sixth round of US-Iran negotiations originally set for June 15.

The 12-day military escalation between Israel and Iran concluded with a US-brokered ceasefire that became effective June 24.

Trump Signals Willingness to Lift Iran Sanctions 'At Right Time'
The president characterized Iran as "very different now" compared to two weeks prior.

"I hope it's over. Yeah, I think Iran wants to meet. I think they want to make peace, and I'm all for it," he declared.

Addressing Syria, Trump disclosed that Washington removed sanctions against Damascus following regional pressure from Middle Eastern nations.

"We took the sanctions off (Syria) because we want to give them a chance," he explained.

Trump emphasized his readiness to eliminate US's severe "biting" sanctions against Iran when conditions permit.

"I would love to be able to, at the right time, take those sanctions off (Iran), give them a chance at rebuilding, because I'd like to see Iran build itself back up in a peaceful manner and not going around saying, 'Death to America,' 'Death to the USA,' 'Death to Israel,' as they were doing," he concluded.
