Activists Start Hunger Strike in Belgium, Demand Israel Ties End

(MENAFN) On Monday, a coalition of activists initiated a hunger strike in Ghent, Belgium, protesting the Belgian government’s ongoing relations with Israel and standing in solidarity with the Palestinian population.

The strike, organized by the Saint Michael Movement and backed by both local and global supporters, began at the Chapel of Our Lady of Schreiboom, as reported by a Belgian public broadcaster.

During the protest, participants will subsist solely on sugar water, coffee, or tea, maintaining the fast until its conclusion on July 12.

Priest Lode Vandeputte, a key organizer, stated, "We can no longer remain silent while a genocide is taking place."

The activist group claims Belgium persists in collaboration with Israel, urging a halt to what they call Belgian complicity.

"We ask that this Belgian complicity ends. There must be an end to the diplomatic, economic and military cooperation with the Israeli government and army," the group emphasized.

Since October 2023, despite numerous international demands for a ceasefire, the Israeli military has continued what critics describe as a genocidal campaign in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 57,400 Palestinians—predominantly women and children.

In a significant legal development, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Furthermore, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its military operations in the Gaza Strip.
