Modi, Zelensky Discuss Ukraine War
According to a statement from New Delhi, Modi reiterated India’s “steadfast and consistent position” in favor of a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Modi emphasized that India “remains committed” to contributing in every possible way toward an “early and peaceful” end to the hostilities.
His statement came shortly after New Delhi expressed support for “the understanding” reached between Moscow and Washington concerning an upcoming meeting in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.
This summit is expected to take place later this week.
India’s Foreign Ministry noted, “This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, ‘This is not an era of war’.” This aligns with India’s ongoing diplomatic approach to the crisis.
On the other side, Zelensky expressed appreciation for Modi’s “warm words of support for our people,” but also called upon India to scale back its purchases of Russian energy.
He argued that doing so would help “reduce its potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war.”
Writing on X, Zelensky added, “It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over Russia sends the corresponding signals to Moscow.”
