Hungary Reaffirms Commitment to Russian Energy
(MENAFN) Hungary has emphasized its continued reliance on Russian oil and natural gas to meet its domestic energy demands, asserting it has no plans to cut ties with its long-standing supplier.
Speaking at the Russian Energy Week forum held in Moscow, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto made it clear that the country’s energy stability hinges on its current supply lines and long-duration agreements with Russian firms.
Despite repeated calls from Brussels for all EU nations to sever connections with Moscow and cease purchasing Russian energy resources, Hungary remains defiant.
Szijjarto noted that Hungary has been under intense pressure to turn away from Russian energy in favor of “diversifying” its sources.
However, he rejected this narrative as “insane” and “completely illogical,” questioning the rationale behind labeling the abandonment of a major supplier as diversification.
The foreign minister issued a strong warning about the consequences of halting Russian gas flows, stating that Hungary “will not be able to ensure the necessary fuel supplies” if that happens.
The same concern, he added, applies to crude oil delivered via the southern segment of the Druzhba pipeline.
He emphasized that current alternative supply routes are not capable of replacing the volumes transported through the TurkStream gas corridor and the Druzhba network.
Szijjarto went on to commend Hungary's collaboration with Russian energy firms, highlighting their consistent track record of fulfilling contractual terms.
“If we needed more, they provided more; if we needed less, they provided less. Contract terms have always been honored, so why should we suddenly sever these relations?” he remarked.
The minister concluded by stating that Hungary's strategic alliance with Russia has helped maintain a stable and secure energy position for the nation.
