Gabon President’s Party Commands Key Legislative Election
The UDB won 50 seats in the second round held Saturday, adding to the 52 seats secured in the first round on September 27, giving the party control of 70% of the legislature, the report detailed.
The Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), the former ruling party now backing President Nguema, won 16 seats—five from the first round and 11 from the second.
Meanwhile, the Rally for the Fatherland and Modernity (RPM) secured three seats, with the National Union (UN) and Gabonese Social Democrats (SDG) each winning two seats. Various smaller parties captured one seat apiece.
An additional seven lawmakers were elected as independents, while four parliamentary seats remain unfilled due to postponed elections, L'Union noted. The electoral commission is expected to announce the official final results in the coming days.
Approximately 900,000 Gabonese voters were eligible to participate in the first round, the country’s first legislative vote since the 2023 military coup that removed former President Ali Bongo from power.
Regional election observers from Benin, Guinea, Mauritania, and Togo stated Monday that the second round was conducted in “a calm and serene atmosphere despite a lack of enthusiasm.”
President Nguema, who assumed power after winning the presidential election in April, now heads a parliament largely dominated by his party, solidifying his control over Gabon’s political landscape.
