Lavrov says Alaska dialogue is ongoing between Trump, Putin

(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that discussions initiated by the Alaska summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are continuing, with both countries still able to advance based on agreements reached during the meeting.

Speaking to Kommersant in an interview published Wednesday, Lavrov noted that Putin traveled to Alaska with a response to a US proposal presented by Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, during his earlier visit to Moscow. “Russia accepts the proposal… and suggests a specific path for its implementation,” Lavrov said, without providing further details.

In August, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described Washington’s offer as “acceptable,” though neither country disclosed specifics. Lavrov added that Russia is still awaiting a US reply to its roadmap presented at the summit.

The minister praised Trump and his administration as the only Western government making an effort to understand the root causes of the Ukraine conflict, including the West’s push to integrate Ukraine into NATO and what he described as “discrimination” against the people of Donbass by Kiev. He said that Putin and Trump discussed “a way forward” on these issues during their meeting.

Lavrov also addressed recent US statements about potentially supplying Kiev with Tomahawk missiles, asserting that such announcements do not alter the understandings reached in Alaska. He attributed the remarks to pressure from Ukraine’s supporters in Western Europe, claiming the EU and UK are attempting to make the conflict “Trump’s war” and force the US president to change his original stance.

The August Alaska summit was the first in-person encounter between Trump and Putin since 2019. While both leaders described it as productive, no major breakthrough was achieved.

Ushakov noted last week that the agreements reached so far are not well-received by Ukraine and its European allies, but emphasized that “this does not mean they are not working.”
