Russia Warns UK Sanctions Could Disrupt Global Energy Markets

(MENAFN) Russia’s embassy in London issued a sharp rebuke Wednesday to the UK’s latest wave of sanctions targeting Russian oil majors, warning the measures could disrupt global energy markets and hurt consumers worldwide.

The new sanctions, unveiled earlier in the day by the UK government, strike at the heart of Russia’s energy sector—specifically targeting Rosneft, Lukoil, several banks, and more than two dozen tankers and companies based in China, the United Arab Emirates, India, Thailand, and Singapore accused of facilitating Russian oil shipments.

The embassy accused London of economic sabotage with global repercussions, stating: “Attacks on leading Russian oil and gas companies are destabilizing global energy markets and ultimately impacting consumers around the world, including ordinary Britons and local businesses.”

Officials further warned the penalties would deepen energy insecurity across developing nations.

“Contrary to the loud assurances of British leaders, these restrictions will have no impact on Russian foreign policy,” the statement continued. “It’s high time London realized that attempts to blackmail our country and to speak to us in the language of sanctions and threats are senseless and futile.”

According to the embassy, the move reflects growing unease within the British political elite, amid what it described as battlefield setbacks for Ukraine.

The UK’s actions, it said, were “driven by the growing desperation of the British establishment” amid the “deteriorating position” of Ukrainian forces on the battlefield.

The statement also warned that the sanctions strategy could sabotage diplomatic efforts.

Sanction pressure “only complicates peaceful dialogue and leads to further escalation,” it said, vowing that Russia would continue to defend its national interests and uphold economic resilience.

The UK government framed the sanctions as part of its ongoing strategy to cut off revenue streams fueling Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.
