Trump Weighs “Strong Options” Against Iran
In recent days, Trump issued multiple statements signaling America stands "locked and loaded" to intervene on behalf of Iranians seeking "freedom." The president warned his administration will "start shooting" should Iranian forces fire upon demonstrators.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian blamed the US for stoking the unrest Sunday. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reinforced that position Monday, branding the upheaval a "terrorist war" targeting the nation.
"We're looking at it very seriously. The military is looking at it, and we're looking at some very strong options. We'll make a determination," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One late Sunday.
Earlier that day, The Wall Street Journal reported—citing US officials—that Trump plans a Tuesday meeting with advisers to assess potential intervention measures. Options reportedly under review include amplifying anti-government content online, launching "secretive cyber weapons" against Iranian military and civilian infrastructure, implementing additional sanctions, and conducting military strikes.
Trump also disclosed that Iranian officials contacted the White House seeking "to negotiate," adding that a "meeting is being set up," though action might precede any dialogue. He announced intentions to consult Elon Musk about deploying Starlink satellite internet terminals into Iran, enabling protesters to circumvent the government's recent internet blackout.
The unrest ignited December 28 following a currency collapse that triggered dramatic spikes in food and essential goods prices. Demonstrations rapidly intensified into violent riots and confrontations with security personnel, reportedly claiming hundreds of lives. Numerous mosques, medical facilities, and other structures have been torched nationwide, with circulating photos and videos documenting widespread devastation.
Trump's statements follow closely behind a US operation in Venezuela involving President Nicolas Maduro. Political analysts have cautioned that additional interventions could generate serious risks for multiple nations globally.
