Moscow Reports Gains in Eastern Ukraine

(MENAFN) Moscow stated on Friday that it had seized control of two additional settlements in Ukraine, as the Russia-Ukraine conflict approaches its fifth year next month.

The Russian Defense Ministry asserted that its troops in the Donetsk region took control of the settlement of Zakitne, located roughly 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east of the city of Sloviansk.

Sloviansk remains one of Ukraine’s last bastions in the eastern region, aside from Kramatorsk, the administrative hub of the area, since Moscow occupied Donetsk city in 2014.

The ministry also reported that its units in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region captured the village of Olenokostiantynivka, situated approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) northwest of the frontline town of Huliaipole.

Moscow had previously claimed to have taken the town late last month, though Ukraine has refuted this assertion.

Ukraine’s General Staff stated in a morning briefing that its forces repelled five Russian offensives near three settlements on the Sloviansk front, including Zakitne, and thwarted 30 attacks near six settlements on the Huliaipole front, including Olenokostiantynivka, which Russia’s report referred to as Zhovtnevoe.

Nevertheless, Ukrainian officials have yet to respond to these latest claims, and independent verification remains challenging due to the ongoing conflict.
