Transport Strike Disrupts Movement Across Senegal

(MENAFN) A nationwide strike by transport workers in Senegal, which began on Monday and is set to last three days, has severely affected mobility in the capital, Dakar, leaving many residents struggling to travel. The action was initiated by a major federation of road transport unions.

With most public transport services halted, streets in the city have appeared unusually empty, according to reports. Union leaders had called for a complete suspension of transport operations across the country. Although a small number of drivers have continued to operate, their limited activity has been insufficient to meet public demand.

The strike, supported by another transport union, stems from long-standing concerns about how the sector is managed, as well as the government’s refusal to officially recognize a newly formed union established in February 2026.

Transport workers have also accused authorities of ongoing harassment and corruption along national routes. Among their primary demands is the immediate implementation of previously agreed reforms, particularly those aimed at reducing the number of roadside checkpoints.

Union officials say tensions have intensified due to restrictive government measures and a breakdown in negotiations. Drivers have specifically objected to a nighttime ban imposed on certain minibuses, arguing that it is unjustified.

Earlier in the month, the union federation withdrew from discussions with government representatives, accusing them of taking a “frivolous approach” and failing to follow proper procedures.

Despite prior notice of the strike, authorities introduced contingency plans. According to reports, alternative transport providers, including state and private operators as well as the Dakar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, were mobilized in an effort to maintain essential services and accommodate daily commuting needs.
